In the morning of 11st Jan, 2012, the first stage project of ” Panda Valley” has been completed and a ceremony for first batch of giant pandas’ moving to valley was grandly held in reintroduction center of Dujiang Dam. As a research individual of transition to wild state will be first back to Majia Ditch of Dujiang Dam, the mountains that their ancestors ever came from and set foot on the way home as the largest population of artificial captive breeding pandas.

The leaders of each national, provincial and municipal level including Forest Bureau, Science and Technology Bureau, Tourist Bureau as well as international reserve organization e.g. WWF, TNC, CI, and science research cooperate institutions e.g. Japanese Wakayama Zoo, Sichuan University etc, and national nature reserves all attended this ceremony and make a speech respectively.









The first batch of 6 pandas, moving to “Panda Valley” is XiRong, XinYa, GongZai, YingYing, ZiZi and QiQi. Yao Ming, NBA star always dedicated to wildlife reserve, also rush to “Panda Valley” intentionally to take part in launching ceremony.

With support of government at all levels and effort of multigenerational scientific & technical personnel, Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding (Base) has set up the biggest population of artificial captive breeding of pandas. Nowadays, the animal resources, scientific level, culture accumulation and development environment related to panda reserve are all in stable development situation with population bases of implementing wild reintroduction and technical support.


• The increasing expansion of panda’s population in base caused a huge population density of captive breeding, growing requirements on dens infrastructure and risk of epidemic disease cross-infection, meanwhile the accelerated progress of urbanizations bring about more and more pressures on giant pandas development space. To ensure Chengdu pandas population safe, relieve base space pressure, accelerate progress of pandas’ returning to wild and realize the ultimate goal of panda reserve for returning to nature totally, the idea of establishment of “ Panda Valley” is formally on the agenda with powerful support of related department, agreement of municipal government and many times field reconnaissance of expert group.
Based on the experience of other species reintroduction and under the premise of ensuring self-maintenance of captive breeding population, the experts did scientific screening with individual age, gender, health status and so on:
1. Age
According to different age groups of pandas’ requirement on living environment, the sub-adult pandas (2~4 Years old) is best chose. As the childhood and the old are more easy to get sick with high mortality rate that are not suitable for wild reintroduction train, however, the sub-adult almost finished feeding habits transition from drinking milk to eating bamboos that is of better adaptation to environment
2. Health Status
Mainly rely on the health index e.g. weight, size, tooth, rhythm of heart, breath, body temperature, blood count, blood biochemistry and organ development as well as relevant behavioral competence to choose.
3. Gender
In consideration of different influence on target population rejuvenation when releasing individual with different genders, so a collocation of different genders is took into account.
4. Genetic Background
Follow the rule that the alternative individual should not have effect on the healthy development of captive breeding pandas population and also keep balance with inheritance protection of reintroduction one.

• At present, the reintroduction center has made full preparation on dens construction, out & indoor feeding facilities, environment eutrophication, feed and personnel configuration to lay the foundation for panda settling and running wild training .
The panda reintroduction need abide by individual development law and living status. This process may request large number of scientific personnel to participate by stages:
Phase 1 Choice and train to reintroduction individual
Phase 2 Chose and appraisement to reintroduction destination
Phase 3 Improve viability of domestication individual
Phase 4 Carry out monitor to pandas after reintroduction.
